Pathology Group of Louisiana (PGL) provides a broad range of anatomic and clinical pathology services for many physician offices and hospitals throughout Greater Baton Rouge and Southeast Louisiana. Our board-certified, highly experienced and widely respected Pathologists also provide medical directorship and clinical expertise for our contracted hospitals and non-hospital clinical laboratories.

The following information will help explain services for which you may receive a bill,

PGL Pathologists and staff receive, prepare and process tissue samples received from both physician office and hospital settings.

For specimens sent by your doctor's office:
Our couriers transport the specimens to our laboratory.  Our trained technicians prepare and process the specimens onto slides, which our Pathologists microscopically examine to render a diagnosis.  Results are then sent to your doctor.

For hospital and surgery center specimens:
PGL Pathologists are available to evaluate specimens removed during surgery and outpatient procedures.  These specimens are prepared and processed immediately at the hospital or transported to our laboratory for processing.  Our Pathologists then examine the slides and render a professional interpretation of the results.  These results are then sent to the facility and your physician.

Because PGL is an independent group of physicians providing specialized services to doctors and hospitals, you may receive a bill from your doctor or hospital and a separate bill from PGL relating to the same procedure.  The Pathologist's fee is not included in the bill from your doctor or hospital. The doctor's charge is for professional services provided during your office visit or surgical procedure; the hospital's charge is for the technical laboratory processing of the specimen, tissue, blood or bodily fluids; and the pathology bill is for professional services associated with the interpretation or diagnosis of the specimen, tissue, blood, or bodily fluids.
